Sustainable Claremont is excited to announce our inaugural Green Home Tour

When we think about the goal of transforming our lives to be more sustainable, we know that some of our biggest opportunities are under our own roofs! The average American family consumes roughly 300 gallons of water each day, and a whopping 20% of all GHG emissions in the US comes from the energy we consume at home. That means that the best place to start being more sustainable is at home, and the time to start is now!

Who should attend?

Have you been thinking about getting solar panels installed, but are not sure where to start? Maybe you’re concerned about your water bill and the ongoing drought, and you wish you had someone to talk to about how to use less water while maintaining an attractive yard. Or, maybe you are a renter and you wish you knew how you could reduce the amount of waste that gets sent to the landfill from your household? The Green Home Tour is the onramp to help you take critical first steps towards sustainability at home.

When is it happening?

This is a four-day event taking place over the course of four consecutive Mondays in June. Each week we will feature a different type of home from the Claremont community where residents have made significant and unique efforts to make their household operations more sustainable.  Each tour will take place on Zoom starting at 7pm for ~1.5hrs.

What does it cost?

Nothing but your time! Thanks to our event sponsors, we are able to offer this program to you free of charge! Register just once to be automatically registered for all four Mondays! You may join us for one or any combination of tours.

What does it include?

Each week we will take a virtual tour of a home and then engage in a live Q&A with the residents to learn about their experiences, what went right (or wrong), what they would have done differently, and what they plan to do next.  You’ll have a chance to learn about efforts ranging from installing solar panels, and improving a home’s energy efficiency, to changing the way the households handle their waste and purchase consumer goods!  All registered attendees will receive a copy of our Green Home Resource Guide following the tour. This is a great opportunity to learn from your neighbors and get your questions answered from the comfort of your own couch!

Schedule of events

June 7, 2021:  Residential Renewable Power – Generation, Storage and Management.

Tour a net-zero home that relies almost solely on renewable solar power, storage and management. Also discuss the relative benefits and costs of grid scaled renewable power vs. rooftop solar with this home owner.

June 14th, 2021: Backyard Bounty: Gardens, Greywater and Chickens.

Tour the property surrounding a historic 1920s home that has been transformed into an eclectic mix of edible, drought tolerant and native plants. A greywater system reuses water to support fruit trees and backyard hens recycle table and garden scraps into a steady supply of fresh eggs and fertilizer for the garden.

June 21, 2021: Home Energy Efficiency.

With a professional energy efficiency audit in hand, find out how these homeowners focused their home upgrades on state of the art insulation, energy efficient heating and air conditioning, and rooftop solar.

June 28, 2021: Sustainable Living for Renters and Seniors.

This tour explores ways that renters and those living in senior communities, dormitories, or with family have reduced their impacts at home without making big changes to the property where they live.  Join us for a night with residents who share how they engage in everything from community gardening and composting, to conserving energy and changing consumer behaviors and diets!

Join us on this tour to discover more resources about local home retrofit providers, to gain a greater understanding of what is possible and how to do it, and to hear first-hand testimonials that provide helpful insights about the process.

Green Home Tour Resource Guide

All registered participants will receive a free copy of our Green Home Tour Resource Guide, which includes a synopsis of each featured tour along with a listing of the contractors and resources that were used by the residents.
