Our School Edible Garden Program transforms school campuses into thriving, student-powered learning environments. Successfully launched at two schools (Sycamore Elementary School and Mountain View Elementary School) within the Claremont Unified School District, the program allows students to plant, cultivate, and harvest their own food while learning about science, sustainability, nutrition, and environmental responsibility.

Through hands-on garden experiences, students develop confidence, teamwork, leadership, and practical life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. The gardens inspire curiosity, encourage healthy habits, and foster a meaningful connection between children, their food, and the natural world.

Students participate in:

  • Planting, growing, and harvesting fruits, vegetables, and herbs
  • Learning plant science, ecosystems, pollinators, and native plants
  • Exploring composting, soil health, pest management, and invasive species
  • Journaling observations and documenting garden changes
  • Designing and managing garden beds
  • Preparing and tasting fresh produce to learn about nutrition
  • Building teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Taking part in community harvest events with families and school partners
